KONA BAY INDIA Pvt. Ltd.A Strategic Joint Venture
The Broodstock Multiplication Centre (BMC) is a landmark achievement in India's aquaculture sector, made possible through a powerful tripartite alliance between Sapthagiri Hatcheries, Hendrix Genetics (Netherlands), and Kona Bay (USA). Located in Kotapalem Village, Ranasthalam Mandal, Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh, this world-class facility represents a major leap toward genetic self-reliance and national shrimp seed security.
Our Purpose
India has historically depended on imported broodstock from countries like USA which often resulted in high costs, limited supply windows, and logistical delays.
The BMC eradicates this bottleneck by establishing a continuous, local supply of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF), genetically superior broodstock customized for Indian environmental and farming conditions.
Facility Infrastructure
The BMC is equipped with internationally benchmarked infrastructure that mirrors the world's most advanced broodstock facilities:
AQF-Compliant Biosecure Quarantine Units
Ensuring each incoming Pre-Post Larvae (Pre-PL) undergoes a strict quarantine protocol before entering the main facility.
32 High-Capacity Grow-Out Tanks (63 Tons Each)
Spacious, circular tanks that support optimal conditioning, feeding, and growth of broodstock.
12 Pre-Maturation Tanks (15 Tons Each)
Designed for reproductive development and hormonal priming to ensure high spawning frequency and egg viability.
Advanced Water Filtration Systems
Reverse osmosis, UV sterilization, and temperature regulation systems to simulate ideal oceanic conditions.
In-House Laboratory Support
On-site qRT-PCR diagnostic labs, microbiology setups, and regular histopathological screening ensure every broodstock is free of major pathogens.
Power Redundancy and Staff Housing
The facility is self-sustained with uninterrupted power backup, staff quarters, and 24/7 surveillance.
Strategic Benefits to India
Import Substitution
Reduces India's dependency on foreign broodstock imports, cutting costs and lead times.
Genetic Customization
Produces broodstock lines tailored to Indian pond salinity, temperature, disease profile, and climatic variability.
Biosecurity Assurance
All broodstock lines are SPF-certified and raised under world-class containment protocols, ensuring zero pathogen risk to hatcheries.
Improved National Capacity
Enables Indian hatcheries to access premium genetic material year-round, improving overall PL quality and farm productivity.
Future Vision
This BMC is not the end—it is the beginning of India's journey towards becoming a global genetic hub. Sapthagiri plans to integrate a full-fledged Nucleus Breeding Centre (NBC) within the BMC to:
Develop disease-resistant and high-yielding shrimp lines through selective breeding
Conduct ongoing genomic studies in collaboration with international research bodies
Scale up broodstock exports to neighbouring Asian and African countries
The BMC is not just a facility—it is a national asset, driving genetic sovereignty and aquaculture advancement across India.
